Rotarians Support I Can Read

Kids at the I can read program

Iowa City Noon Rotary promotes literacy in our community by distributing "I Can Read Songs for Reading" DVD to our schools through the Family Resource Centers.  Ten schools are involved in receiving copies for kindergarten and preschool families to check out and use to sing and dance their young children into reading and writing. Children love the catchy tunes and segments on learning words.  Parents are pleased to have a way of helping their children get ready for school instruction in reading and writing. The Roosevelt Literacy night was a success.  Everyone enjoyed the pizza and the activities based on learning the 13 powerful words taught through the songs on the DVD.   Rotarians(names) were amazed to see the energy and activity level of 35 young children and the Roosevelt teachers' skill at managing the event.

Roosevelt held their I Can Read Songs Family Literacy Night on March 11th.

Here is a description of their event.  Families began by having pizza in the gym.  Then the kindergarteners, younger children, and their parents went to the media center. Older children stayed in the gym and drew, read, or did homework at tables. The media center group received a talk about helping children with literacy at home and they all watched a few segments of the video.    Then families broke into three groups with different literacy activities (one was a bingo game with the words) and the families rotated literacy activities.  The event lasted from 6:00 to 7:30.  Everyone seemed pleased with the evening. There were about 75 parents and children at the event.

Jody Braverman commented at the end of the night, "Let's do it again several more times and bring this DVD and the skills it will enhance to kids all over."

What we learned from this first DVD distribution event:

- the kids love the DVD

- the teachers & aides do a great job presenting the program, thanking Rotary, coraling the kids, and explaining procedures for check-out, order of events, etc.

- the parents who show up appreciate the program

- Rotarians pitch in, adjust to the situation, and enjoy the project

- Must deliver DVDs in advance to FRC's so they can affix inventory control number for check-out

Thanks to Rotarians LaDonna Wicklund, Chuck Hesse, Casey Cook, Sandy Seibert, and Ladonna's husband Gary for their help.

The Four Way Test of the things we think, say or do

1. Is it the TRUTH?

2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?

3. Will it build GOOD WILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?

4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
